SHARCNET SEMINAR

Friday, February 22, 2008
"OpenMP: 3.0 and Beyond"

Barbara Chapman
Department of Computer Science
University of Houston

Format: Live presentation with interaction via AccessGrid.

Host: University of Windsor

Time: 11:00 EST. Professor Chapman will be available online after the presentation for discussions. Refreshments will be served.

Abstract: Dual-core machines are actively marketed for desktop and home computing. Systems with a larger number of cores are deployed in the server market. Some cores are capable of executing multiple threads. Clearly, the future is multi- and many-core, as well as many-threaded. It is also heterogeneous, as a variety of devices such as accelerator boards and GPUs may be configured on a single board. In future, high-end applications will need to execute on complex parallel platforms whose nodes will be heterogeneous and multicore.

OpenMP is a shared memory API that was designed to be a portable parallel programming interface for SMPs. It is increasingly expected to be a programming model of choice for exploiting the capabilities of multicore machines. In this presentation, we review the status of OpenMP, discuss enhancements to its functionality in version 3.0, and consider the programming challenges posed by large-scale, emerging computer platforms.
