Leading Research Agencies Announce New International Competition: âThe Digging into Data Challengeâ

A new international competition called the Digging into Data Challenge was announced by four leading research agencies: the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) from the United Kingdom, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) from the United States, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) from Canada. The Digging into Data Challenge encourages humanities and social science research using large-scale data analysis, challenging scholars to develop international partnerships and explore vast digital resources, including electronic repositories of books, newspapers, and photographs to identify new opportunities for scholarship. The Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) and SHARCNET, the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network, will present a daylong workshop to discuss the relationships between scientific and industry research, and art and design. VizDay: Case Studies in Visualization, a free event taking place Wednesday, November 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will bring together experts from the physical sciences, biology, medicine, geology and mining, and the social sciences to explore how invisible scientific data can be turned into meaningful images, and how this practice can lead to new innovation and economic prosperity. Jeff Gilchrist, a Carleton University doctoral student, is part of an international team that has discovered the largest known prime number which contains 12.9 million digits. The number was independently verified by Gilchrist using 16 days of super-computer resources provided by SHARCNET. |
