As many in the user community are already aware, SHARCNET provides (or is in the process of deploying) collaborative video conferencing facilities at member institutions. The software that drives these installations is called Access Grid (AG), and clients capable of connecting to AG servers can run on desktop machines as easily as they can on the PCs in the physical AG rooms we provide; however, any user who has attempted this has likely learned that AG software is notoriously confusing to get set up properly.

This seminar will provide a live demonstration of the installation of Access Grid client software in a Windows and OS X environment, and the means by which you connect to AG venue servers by use of a bridge server (also provided by SHARCNET). Users are encouraged to bring a laptop, where possible or convenient, and perform their own installation at the same time while assistance is available from SHARCNET technical staff. Time will be provided in which we will attempt to resolve individual technical issues people might encounter during installation/connection.

Please note: A proper AG installation/connection will require a working web cam, microphone and speakers (note to Mac users: the iSight camera---external or built-in to more modern macs works very well with the AG client). A headset microphone should be considered a requirement for destktop use of the AG software. There is a wide range of hardware out there and SHARCNET staff will not necessarily be able to provide assistance setting up web cams and headsets to work with your operating system (however will strive to assist where an otherwise working webcam/headset has issues working with AG). Users should check with their local SHARCNET staff regarding availability of networking during the seminar.
