Abstract
A direct numerical simulation of a rectangular horizontal surface jet is performed at a Reynolds number of 4420. The objective of this study is to establish the validity of the results from the numerical simulation. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data for a similar jet at Reynolds number of 4420 and Froude number of 0.49. Some important parameters like mean stream-wise velocity, mean lateral velocity, jet decay rate and rms velocities are compared and shown that numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Results also indicate that the surface jet achieves self-similar behaviour. The near surface region has higher stream-wise and lateral velocity fluctuations while surface normal fluctuations diminish on approaching the free surface.
