Abstract |
Direct numerical simulation was performed for flow in channels with a periodic array of cylindrical spacers which is typical of those employed in membrane modules. Numerical calculations were performed for fully developed flow at Reynolds number of Re=800 based on half channel height. Quantitative statistical characteristics including frequency spectra of flow fluctuations, wall shear stresses distribution and flow structures are presented. The effect of spacer location upon the flow field was investigated by altering distance of spacers from the walls. Pressure drop, which is related to the energy expenditure in membrane operations, has been computed and found to be highly dependent on spacer location. |
