When SHARCNET was first conceived, the idea of developing Canada’s most powerful academic computer was only second on the list of objectives. What was first? Clamping down on the exodus of Canada’s best and brightest researchers who were streaming out of the country to other points on the globe in search of answers to complex research problems.

Registration for HPCS 2005: “the new HPC culture”, is now available. This 19th international symposium on HPC systems and applications will be hosted by SHARCNET at the University of Guelph, May 15-18, 2005.

The team at SHARCNET wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous New Year. We look forward to working with you in 2005!

SHARCNET is pleased to welcome Zhenming (Jemmy) Hu to the position of High Performance Technical Computing (HPTC) Consultant. Jemmy holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry from Kyoto University in Japan and a Masters degree in Computer Science from Dalhousie University. Jemmy will be based at the University of Waterloo, but his services will available to all community members.

The University of Waterloo, one of SHARCNET’s newest institutional partners, has been named the “best overall” university in reputation in Canada, in Maclean’s magazine’s annual universities ranking issue.

At their October 22, 2004 meeting, the SHARCNET Board of Directors approved a new model for the organization that will have a scientist with a strong research background lead the organization. The current Executive Director, Carmen Gicante, supports the new direction and has made a decision to leave SHARCNET to pursue other opportunities effective November 1st. Dr. Hugh Couchman, the Scientific Director, will assume leadership of SHARCNET.

Wilfrid Laurier’s Faculty of Science has launched a monthly seminar series in Computational Sciences and Modelling. The series, sponsored in part by SHARCNET, will cover all areas of Computational Science and Applied & Statistical Modelling.

Canada’s high performance computing industry is critical to the health of country, and more awareness and attention needs to be paid to its development, according to a new survey of industry experts.
