Abstract |
Dy2Ti2O7 is a model geometrically frustrated magnetic material with a strongly correlated paramagnetic spin ice regime that extends from 1K down to as low as 60 mK. We find that diffuse elastic neutron scattering intensities in the spin ice regime can be remarkably well described by a picture of weakly interacting hexagonal clusters, suggesting an "emergent cluster" response, as observed in other geometrically frustrated magnets. However, using Monte Carlo simulations, we find that an equally good description is obtained via a microscopic theory provided that the interaction terms in the model Hamiltonian are fine-tuned. Our results suggest a purely microscopic origin of the cluster-like experimental scattering, which is therefore not indicative of emergent quasiparticles. |
